THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

A York address to the whale. Caught lately off Gravesend.

5 Apr 1809

RCIN 810766

A whale which had washed up on the beach at Gravesend was brought by boat to London on 30 March, where it became a popular, if malodorous, tourist attraction. Rowlandson imagines the Duke of York on his knees, pleading with the whale to distract the public from his own actions. Cat. 80
