Worn by The Queen for the Gillies’ Ball, Balmoral Castle, 1971. During The Queen’s annual residence at Balmoral Castle dances known as Gillies’ Balls are given for neighbours, estate and Castle staff. For the dances, which were originally instituted by Queen Victoria, gentlemen of the Royal Family wear Highland Dress while royal ladies wear long evening dresses with Royal Stewart tartan sashes.
