Coat

1935

RCIN 250692

This princess-line double-breasted coat was worn by Princess Elizabeth, aged 9, for a Service of Thanksgiving for the Silver Jubilee of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary at St Paul’s Cathedral, 6 May 1935. The matching bonnet is of fine woven straw trimmed with velvet flowers. The coat was also worn for an official visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937. Formal coats of this type were typical of the outfits worn by Princess Elizabeth for public appearances during childhood.
