SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)

Evening gown

c.1972

RCIN 100039

Worn for a State Banquet in the Royal Palace of Bangkok during The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh’s State Visit to King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand 10 –15 February 1972. The unusually-shaped neckline hints at oriental design while the godets (inserted panels) of the skirt and the coordinating jewelled embroidery are in the colours of the highest order of chivalry in Thailand, the Most Illustrious Order of the Royal House of Chakri, which The Queen was awarded in 1960 and which is exhibited in the nearby display case.
