SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)

Evening Dress

1961

RCIN 100044

Worn for a State Banquet during the State Visit to Italy, 1961. This remarkably elegant shift dress is fitted with a full length train which hangs from the shoulders. The dress and shift are embroidered all over with a vermicelli design in shades of gold and silver. The dress and train demonstrate the remarkable skill of Hartnell’s embroidery room in maintaining the straight lines of dress and train in spite of the weight of the embroidery on such a lightweight fabric.
