MASTERS OF THE CONSUL SMITH PICTURE FRAMES (MID 18TH CENTURY)

Frame for RCIN 402718, after Titian, 'The Penitent Magdalen'

RCIN 7402718

These frames of Italian origin were acquired in 1762 when George III (1738-1820) bought the art collection of the British Consul to Venice, Joseph Smith (1682-1760).

They have a simple design with plain centre panels, and scrolling foliage corners on a punched ground, some also having dentil sight or back edges. This style dates from the mid-eighteenth century.
