23 November – 5 March 2023

The Städel Museum have mounted a comprehensive exhibition devoted to the great Bolognese painter Guido Reni, featuring 130 paintings, drawings and prints. In the early seventeenth century, Reni was one of the most successful and celebrated painters in all of Europe, coveted by the most important patrons and avidly collected for two centuries after his death; but during in the nineteenth century, he fell dramatically out of fashion, and his importance is still being reassessed. Reni had a profound effect on European art, giving visual form to the beauty of the divine – whether the Christian kingdom of heaven or the world of the ancient gods. The exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to see eleven drawings from the Royal Collection, alongside associated paintings and in the wider context of Reni’s works.
