The Bowes Museum in Durham is hosting the first exhibition outside London devoted to Baroque master Guido Reni, one of the favourite artists of Queen Henrietta Maria, consort of Charles I.

The exhibition showcases the Bowes Museum’s painting of The Death of Lucretia by Reni, following a long-term project to conserve the work and confirm its attribution. The Death of Lucretia is hung ‘in conversation’ with several other paintings by the artist which depict a female character in a moment of high drama; Reni’s Cleopatra with the Asp, on loan from the Royal Collection, is an exciting addition to this conversation.
