A French Review

c 1786

RCIN 913721

A pair with 'An English Review', this watercolour was intended to be framed for hanging. The audience watching this French army review include a number of monks, underlining the difference between Protestant Britain and Catholic France – a source of distrust on both sides. As at the English review, as many of the men are watching the women as are surveying the troops. Purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales, 1788 Cat. 17
