Conservators study one of the large volumes
The rebinding of Audubon’s 'Birds of America'

The oversize volumes required a team of bookbinders

Finishing

The final process was ‘finishing’ – the decoration and titling of the covers using heated brass tools. This requires both considerable pressure and accuracy.

The original binding’s design was followed as closely as possible in a combination of gold and ‘blind’ (where gold is not added) tooling.
