Conservators study one of the large volumes
The rebinding of Audubon’s 'Birds of America'

The oversize volumes required a team of bookbinders

Covering

New boards were attached and were covered in a style to recreate the original binding. The spine and corners were first covered in leather, with book cloth applied to the rest of the boards. The inner joints were adhered, completing the attachment of the book block to the cover. Finally, marbled paper pastedowns went back inside the new binding.
