A Mi'kmaw sewing basket and cover made from splints of black ash tree and sweet grass. Woven in the Kloqowej ('star') style.
Provenance
Commissioned from Caroline Gould by Nova Scotia and the people of the Mi'kmaq Nation for presentation to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit to Halifax, Canada, 28 June 2010. Caroline Gould (1919-2011) was a Mi'kmaw elder who produced traditional baskets for over eighty years.
