A pen and ink drawing of a landscape scene. Rugged mountains in the background, with a figure mending a fence at the centre. A figure with a donkey is crossing a bridge at lower right, with another group climbing the brow of a hill. With trees to the left and right. With initials, lower left: MR. This drawing is almost identical, in reverse, with the etching, Bartsch 4.
Initially working as a stage designer Marco Ricci returned to Venice from England in 1716 and began making many landscape drawings and paintings. This scene is invented, but the mountains in the background are reminiscent of the Dolomites near his home town of Belluno. His handling of pen and ink, with much hatching, recalls the drawings of his Venetian predecessors Titian and Domenico Campagnola. Ricci made an etching of this drawing, reduced in size and in reverse, that was published after his death by Carlo Orsolini (RCIN 809060.o). Joseph Smith owned 146 landscape drawings by Marco Ricci; Anton Maria Zanetti had 141 drawings in an album now dispersed.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
