Cast yellow metal standard finial in from of a horse with right front leg raised. It is a reduced version of that which would be carried by Roman cavalry. The original finial from which this piece is taken was excavated in 1971 from the floor of a house at Vindolanda. It has since become an emblem for the site.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II on a visit to Northumberland including Vindolanda Trust projects on Hadrian's Wall, 20 May 1998. Her Majesty was told this was a copy from a bronze original she had viewed & would have probably topped a standard.
