A watercolour showing the first meeting of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet is shown standing in the centre, full-length and facing right, beneath an arch. Romeo is standing in front of her, reaching out to take her hand. His hat is falling off and he has removed his mask. A staff, probably part of his costume, lies at his feet. A female figure is shown standing to the left. She is dressed in costume and holding a walking stick. Flowers and a gold jug are shown on a table to the lower left. Further figures are shown on a terrace in the background.
Inscribed lower right: VICTORIA. August 26. 1861.
Queen Victoria's children often made cards and drawings for their parents as gifts on important dates, such as this drawing executed by Victoria, Princess Royal (by then Crown Princess of Prussia) for her father's birthday on 26 August 1861. It would be Prince Albert's last birthday before his death later that year.
