A rectangular carved relief of slate depicting the Mayan God 'L' in profile facing left, wearing a large headdress and smoking a pipe. It is a replica of a relief from AD 690 found at the Temple of the Cross, Chiapas, Mexico. Framed on a hessian back in a rectangular wood frame. 'God L', god of the underworld and of commerce, is typically depicted as an aged man. The broad, feathery headdress he wears is topped by a mythological bird and he is usually shown wearing a jaguar pelt, as here. Both animals associate him with night and the underworld. He leans on a rod-shaped rattle which may have been used in rain petitions.
