Pineapples in Paradise 1990-92
Quilted cotton | RCIN 95503
-
A hand-embroidered batik quilt entitled 'Pineapples in Paradise', in green, yellow and brown on black. It features a stylised geometric pattern of pineapples - a Bahamian symbol of hospitality.
The quilt was selected for presentation to Queen Elizabeth II from six designs prepared by United States-born designer Jul Kamen, who had moved to The Bahamas in 1991. It is made from fabric produced on Andros, an island archipelago in The Bahamas. Batik is a dye-resist technique in which wax is applied to parts of the fabric prior to dyeing, leaving a contrasting design of coloured and uncoloured sections.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Governor General of The Bahamas prior to a State Dinner at Government House, Nassau, on 7 March 1994
