The dense, swirling design on this gold tray mimics the richly carved beams of the Embekke temple near Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s architectural masterpieces. Two entwined swans (hansa puttuwa) appear frequently on square panels within the temple; the motif is replicated here on either end of the tray.
