A painting of Nanak, the first Sikh Guru, seated on a lakeside palace terrace. He sits on a floral carpet wearing a Kashmiri shawl over a dervish’s patched garment with an ascetic’s crutch laid beside him. He holds prayer beads in his left hand with his right extended towards Mardana, his companion, Mardana playing the rabab. A servant standing behind the Guru fans him with a rumal (handkerchief).
This is one of a series of idealised portraits depicting the first nine Sikh Gurus (RCINS 925202-925210) painted in the Punjab in the early-mid 19th century. Each Guru is depicted sitting against a bolster cushion on a lakeside terrace listening to a musician. Above the portraits are their names are written in Punjabi in Gurmukhi script and the paintings are surrounded by illuminated borders.Provenance
