Alexander Marshal (c. 1620-82)
Common sunflower and greyhound c. 1650-82
Watercolour | 45.6 x 33.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 924404
-
A page of watercolours of a large Sunflower and a dog in miniature. The sunflower is native to the Americas and was brought to England in the sixteenth century. The creatures which Marshal often drew on the same sheet as his plant studies are usually out of scale, and seem to be included as light-hearted additions to the florilegium.
