A detailed interior view of the Lower Corridor and Staircase of Balmoral Castle.
The simple decoration of the Lower Corridor provided a contrast to the comforts of the upper floors. The space was hung with the heads of stags hunted by the Prince. Under the mirror can be seen the bronze Le Lion Amoureux by Charles Geefs, a reduction of the life-size plaster that was shown at the Great Exhibition. Signed and dated: BALMORAL / Js Roberts / 1857
Text adapted from Victoria & Albert: Art & Love, London, 2010Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1857, and mounted in her Souvenir Album; Roberts was paid £129 1s for eleven watercolours of Balmoral interiors, and £32 10s for expenses, on 20 January 1858
