A watercolour design for a Waterloo Memorial Pyramid. In the immediate aftermath of Waterloo, numerous memorials to the battle were proposed, although most remained unrealised. Among them was this design for a huge pyramid, as high as St Paul's Cathedral, which would commemorate the Napoleonic Wars in general and the contribution of both the army and the navy. This watercolour was sent to the Prince Regent for his consideration, but the pyramid was never built. An accompanying letter from George Blaquire, Matthew C Wyatt and Phillip W Wyatt, dated 5th November 1815, explains the iconography:
'it appears to us that a grand Pyramid might be erected in a convenient spot - We have fixed upon a Pyramid not only as being best adapted to embrace these several objects - but as being in itself the grandest, most simple and most chaste of architectural designs. It is intended to divide the Pyramid from its base to the top into twenty two equal tiers, denoting the number of years of the war, and forming on the whole a complete chronological table of military and naval events during this period - the whole of which will be described by bas-reliefs in bronze.'
In their letter, the architects suggested that the memorial would take five years to build and would cost up to one million pounds. It was suggested that those who would be discharged from the army be offered employment in building the memorial.Provenance
