The Cambridge family round the Christmas tree dated 1858
-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of the Cambridge family around a Christmas tree in 1858. At the centre of the drawing is Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, with his two sisters, Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge, and Princess Mary. On the left in a purple dress is the artist, Ella Taylor, and her brother, John du Plat Taylor. The Taylor family were good friends of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and visited the family in Hanover and at Kew, spending Christmas at Cambridge Cottage in Kew for the first time in 1858.
Ella Taylor wrote that 'Christmas used to be kept at Cambridge Cottage in right royal style. Christmas Eve was celebrated in german fashion, a splendid Xmas tree was lit in the big drawing room, all around the room were tables covered with white tablecloths & laden with presents' (Royal Archives, WRA Add A8/390/26-7). -
