A chalk drawing of Napoleon Bonaparte on his death bed, after an original by Captain Frederick Marryat. Marryat was stationed on St Helena from 1820. He was able to view, and draw, Napoleon's body shortly after the Emperor's death on 5 May 1821. Numerous copies of his original drawing exist, including the present example. Despite French requests for the return of his body to France, Napoleon was buried on St Helena. His remains were transferred to Paris in 1840.
