The Battle of Waterloo drawn 1815
Watercolour | 48.0 x 68.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 915222
-
A watercolour showing the Battle of Waterloo. Although this work is inscribed 'ad. viv.' ('from life'), Langendijk is unlikely to have witnessed the events he depicts. The building at the centre may be meant to represent La Haye Sainte. British troops, approaching from the right, are repelling French forces, in the grass at lower left.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV when Prince Regent. Perhaps the drawing purchased from Colnaghi & Co on 8 April 1816 (RA GEO/MAIN/28091, 'Drawg Skirmish between the English Dragoons & French Curassiers at Waterloo by Langendyk', £21)
