A watercolour showing La Belle Alliance, the French command post at the Battle of Waterloo. Dighton records a British soldier being stretchered from the battlefield in the right foreground and a mounted Prussian lancer to the east. Hastily dug graves are visible to the left.
The experienced military artist Denis Dighton travelled to Waterloo almost immediately after the battle. He produced nine watercolours of the battlefield, recording among other poignant details the casualties that still awaited burial.Provenance
