Lady Maxwell c. 1750 - c. 1755
Pen and ink and watercolour | 13.7 x 8.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914412
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a female figure, standing full length, wearing a panniered, flowered dress and bergère bonnet. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one, 'Mother of the Duchess of Gordon - dau. of Sir William Maxwell'. Jane, the second daughter (b. 1748) of Sir William Maxwell and Lady Maxwell, was married on 23rd October 1767 to the 4th Duke of Gordon. The inscription is therefore probably much later than the drawing. In style and costume the drawing can be dated to Sandby's time in Scotland 1747-52, or in London and Windsor shortly afterwards.
