Annotated by the artist on the bodice: black felbet (black velvet). The inscription possibly identifies the sitter as Mary Zouch, who became lady-in-waiting to Henry VIII’s third wife, Jane Seymour. It has also been suggested that it shows Anne Gainsford, lady-in-waiting to the King’s second wife Anne Boleyn, whose married name was Zouche. Holbein paid careful attention to the sitter’s dress, noting that her bodice was of black velvet (‘felbet’) and recording the ornament on her headdress.
