A drawing of an invented view, known as a capriccio. In the centre is a tomb underneath an arch. The arch is adorned with a shield containing Canaletto's chevron signature. The arch is also surmounted by seated sculptures of lions. The archway is flanked by two figures on each side. On the left, the figures are shown standing on a platform with a balustrade, while on the right they are shown leaning on a mound of earth. In the distance on the left, is a ruin which is reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome.
