-
On the recto, a drawing of Neptune, standing in a chariot drawn by two sea-horses; see other drawings of the subject by Farinati at RCIN 905009, 904992-3. Inscribed in the hand of William Gibson at lower right, 'P. Farinato. 5.2.' (= 12s 6d).
On the verso, a drawing of the Virgin Annunciate, kneeling at a prie-dieu, hands clasped; behind her, a wall with a niche containing a statue of the Cumaean Sibyl, inscribed below by Farinati, ‘Sibilla chumea profeto di la virgine nociata’. This partial composition has been identified by Stefano L'Occaso as connected to Farinati's commission in 1582 to produce a modello of the Annunciation, to be painted (by another artist) as the organ shutters in the church of Sant'Ercolano, Toscolano-Maderno, on Lake Garda. See L'Occaso, ‘Veneti in Riviera, a cavallo tra Cinquencento e Seicento’, 2018.Provenance
William Gibson (his price mark); probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800-20, p. 117, 'Paolo Farinati'
