The Resurrection c.1853-76
Albumen print | 11.5 x 34.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853699
-
A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as then in the collection of the Marquis de Chennevières-Pointel, Director of the Beaux-Arts. The drawing is very close in composition to the almost entirely destroyed fresco The Resurrection painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the thirteenth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican, and appears to bear the collector's mark of Etienne Desperet.
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
