A photograph of a drawing which appears to be closely related to the almost entirely destroyed fresco Joshua renews the Covenant at Shechem painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the tenth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. The drawing appears to bear the collector's mark of Jonathan Richardson Senior (Lugt 2184). Not in Ruland (1876).
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
