A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of William Russell, and 'an early copy', presumably of the almost entirely destroyed fresco Jacob wrestles with the angel painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
