A chiaroscuro woodcut reproducing, in reverse and with differences in the background, an unknown drawing related to the fresco Joseph sold by his brothers painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the seventh bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the composition to Raphael, production details and the date within the image. Trimmed to borders. On watermarked paper. John Skippe was an amateur artist and connoisseur who amassed a substantial collection of predominantly Italian Renaissance drawings, possibly whilst travelling in Italy in the 1770s. He executed a number of chiaroscuro woodcuts from drawings in his collection which he published in two sets in 1782 and 1783.
