Joseph tells his brothers his dream c.1703-1726
Engraving and etching | 44.6 x 55.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853490
-
A print reproducing, in reverse, the fresco Joseph tells his brothers his dream painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the seventh bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with attribution of the fresco to Raphael and publication details. On watermarked paper (possibly close to Churchill, no.514). Trimmed to platemark.
In this print, the representations of Joseph's dreams (the sheaves of corn and the sun and moon bowing down to him) are in the bottom corners of the image, rather than at the top as they are in the original fresco. Pierre Drevet had premises at Rue St Jacques a l'annonciation in Paris from 1703; he reproduced other works attributed to Raphael (see RCIN 851048 for another example).Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
