-
A photograph of a drawing attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni in the British Museum (inv.no.1860,0616.82) which is generally believed to have been the modello for the fresco Jacob's dream painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. See RCIN 853465 for a woodcut by Ugo da Carpi after the drawing.
The drawing, previously owned by William II, King of the Netherlands and Thomas Lawrence, amongst others, was evidently trimmed at the top before it was photographed as it is missing the figure of God the father, who appears in the fresco.Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
