A print reproducing, in reverse and with significant variations, the fresco Angels appears to Abraham painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the fourth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with a title and production details. First state. On watermarked paper (unidentified).
The British Museum holds an earlier print (BM inv.no.V,1.120), where the figures are not reversed, from which this print was copied. Ruland (1876) describes this print in the Raphael Collection as by the Monogrammist B.M., citing Nagler (I, no.1961), though Nagler noted that the monogramme only appears on the second state.Provenance
