Four etchings printed from four plates designed to be joined together to create one single print reproducing the fresco of The Battle of Constantine at the Milvian Bridge. This was designed by Raphael and eventually painted by his workshop in the Sala di Costantino in the Vatican between 1520 and 1524. Second state. Lettered with artists' names, publisher's address and text in Latin along the lower margin. Numbered at lower right: 3. From Picturae Raphaelis Sanctij Urbinatis ex Aula et Conclavibus Palatij Vaticani..., a series of 18 plates (plus title-page) after Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican published in 1722. The publishing date can be found on the title-page of the series.
Originally made in 1683, the print was published by Gio. Giacomo de Rossi and dedicated to Christina, Queen of Sweden (1626-89). The dedication was later substituted by an inscription in Latin running along the lower margin and the print was included in Picturae Raphaelis Sanctij Urbinatis... published in 1722 by Domenico de Rossi, whose address replaced that of Gio. Giacomo de Rossi.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
