The Sea Victory at Ostia c.1515-50
Engraving | 38.0 x 52.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852847
-
An anonymous engraving reproducing (in reverse) the composition of the fresco of The Victory at Ostia, painted in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1514-15 after designs by Raphael. Lettered on the flag flying above the tower: SPQR (in reverse). Mounted on a backing sheet with pencil annotations. Not in Ruland (1876). Another impression can be found at RCIN 852846.
Bartsch catalogued this engraving as by the School of Marcantonio Raimondi, and described it as made in a manner close to Marco Dente. As the engraving differs from the fresco in several details, it has been suggested that a preparatory drawing for the fresco may have been used as direct source for the engraving.
