A photograph of an etching, signed and dated 1787, of a drawing attributed to Raphael (c.1514) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.4008).
The etching was made by Charles Paul Jean-Baptiste de Bourgevin Vialart de Saint-Morys after the drawing, which was then in his possession. Vialart de Saint-Morys was a collector of Old Master drawings and amateur printmaker who published two groups of prints after drawings in his own collection, the first group dated 1780-89 and the second 1792-94. Cordellier/Py (1992) mention a reproductive print of the drawing included in Recueil Saint-Morys, fol.14. See Bibliographic References.
The drawing is a preparatory study for the figure of the pleading woman seen from the back painted in the foreground of Raphael's fresco of The Fire in the Borgo, executed in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1514. The authorship of the drawing (sometimes attributed to Raphael and sometimes to his School) is subject of much debate. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.Provenance
