Aeneas Rescuing Anchises c.1520-40
Engraving | 21.7 x 18.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852821
-
An engraving reproducing the group of the man saving his father accompanied by a young boy walking at his side painted in the left foreground of Raphael's fresco of The Fire in the Borgo in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican. Only state. Lettered with six lines in Italian identifying the group as Aeneas rescuing his father Anchises from Troy (accompanied by Ascanius). The engraving, which has been formerly attributed to Marcantonio Raimondi, is now generally believed to be the work of Caraglio. As the engraving differs from the fresco in a few details, it has been suggested that it may have been based upon a preparatory drawing for the fresco.
