Figure studies c.1853-76
Carbon print? | 28.2 x 43.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852647
-
A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1510) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3847). Most of the studies are preparatory for the figure of Adam in The Temptation of Adam and Eve, one of the four rectangular frescoes painted on the vault of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. The sketch at the left of the sheet has been interpreted as a study for a St John the Baptist, probably a first idea for a lost or never executed painting. A photograph of The Temptation of Adam and Eve can be found at RCIN 852642.
