The School of Athens dated 1776
Etching | 49.3 x 71.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852547
-
A facsimile of a drawing attributed on plate to Raphael, when in the Praun collection in Nuremberg. Lettered with attribution and location of the drawing. With engraver's name and date. Annotated in pencil on both sides. Not listed in Ruland (1876). Published in Johann Gottlieb Prestel, '
Dessins des meilleurs Peintres d'Italie, d'Allemagne, et des Pays-Bas, du Cabinet de Monsieur Paul de Praun à Nuremberg, 1780, plate 5. Another impression of this facsimile can be found at RCIN 852546.
Ruland (1876) noticed that the drawing reproduced in this print resembles a sheet by Parmigianino now in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990533; a photograph at RCIN 852545), which is thought to be a copy after a lost modello by Raphael of The School of Athens distinct from the cartoon now in the Ambrosiana, Milan.
