A lithographic facsimile of a drawing by Raphael (c.1508-09) now in the Graphische Sammlung, Munich (inv. no.2458). Lettered with Raphael's name on the lower left corner. Annotated in pencil at lower right. Published in Christian von Mannlich, Les Oeuvres Lithographiques, 6 vols., Munich 1811-16, vol.1.
The drawing is a preparatory study for the figure of St Ambrose, seated on the right of the altar in the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), painted by Raphael in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican between 1508 and 1511.
On the verso of this drawing is a depiction of a praying youth (for a lithograph of it, see RCIN 854304).Provenance
