A photograph of a facsimile of a drawing currently in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3890). According to Ruland (1876), the photographed facsimile was made by Count St Morys.
The Louvre drawing has been supposed to be a copy of a preliminary study by Raphael for his fresco of the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), painted around 1508-09 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. It has also been suggested that the drawing may be a 'pastiche of the Disputa composition, perhaps by some Bolognese Raphaeliser' (Gere/Turner 1983). Ruland accepted the traditional attribution to Raphael and placed the drawing with the studies for the Disputa. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.Provenance
