Engraving | 18.4 x 13.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852343
-
An engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting a young man with a lantern accompanied by a ram. This print is stamped at lower right with: "PL", Peter Lely's collector's mark (Lugt L.2092). Trimmed within the platemark. Annotated on the verso.
As Massari underlines (see Bibliographic References), the source for this print has been variously ascribed to Raphael (Bartsch), Peruzzi (Hirth) or Marcantonio himself (Shoemaker). The subject has been debated as well: Mars (Davidson), the astrological sign of Aries (Dunand-Lemarchand), without reaching a consensus.Provenance
