Etching | 24.0 x 35.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852340
-
An etching which is a copy of a print by Giulio Bonasone (see RCIN 852338) depicting naked men and women bathing in a large tub. This print is lettered with the identification of Raphael as the inventor of this composition. Dated 1516. At the bottom right there is a tablet with the initials A.V. which have been variously interpreted. Trimmed within the platemark.
The Istituto Centrale per la Grafica holds two states of this print, with the first state printed on 19th century paper. Therefore Massari (see Bibliographic References) catalogued this print – which was mistakenly considered by Passavant a later state of Bonasone's print – as a 19th century copy. Massari also specifies that this copy is after a print by Agostino Veneziano executed in 1536 based on a supposedly lost design by Raphael.
The subject of the print has been interpreted as Venus, Mercury and Cupid at the bath and the design has been ascribed to Raphael and dated between 1511 and 1516.Provenance
