A print reproducing a painting by Leslie entitled The First Lesson. Without any lettering but with dedicatee's coat of arms. Stamped with the Printsellers Association blind stamp (not in Lugt; variant stamp of Lugt 2050 and Lugt 2051).
The composition is derived from a drawing by Raphael (c.1512-3) now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.728), although in reverse and with a slightly altered background. The composition is better known through an engraving by Marco Dente da Ravenna, an impression of which can be found at RCIN 851281.
The print shows the full-length Virgin, seated on a chair, in profile to the left, holding a book and supporting the Young Christ who stands by her side and looks at the beholder; in an interior.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
