A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1607-08) currently in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.162). A number of copies of the drawing survive, including one formerly in the collection of C.R. Rudolf and one in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.204).
The verso of the drawing is now mutilated but was also much copied. Complete copies of the verso are in the British Museum, London (inv. nos.1895-9-15-623, 1900-8-24-115), Royal Library, Windsor Castle (RCIN 912741) and Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3857).
The photograph shows the full-length Virgin, seated, bending over to the right and holding the Christ Child with both hands. The Child turns His head to the Infant Baptist who sits on the ground at right and holds a reed cross. A standing figure in the right background. The figures are set against an architectural background.Provenance
