A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1502-03) currently housed in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.152a). The drawing is related to the so-called 'Norton Simon Madonna', a painting by Raphael now in the Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena (inv. no.M.1972.2.P).
This drawing is part of a double sided sheet (bisected) for a picture of the Virgin and Child and according to Parker (see Bibliographic References), the two sheets "originally formed part of one and the same", but it is not possible to establish the relative position of the sketches to one another. A photograph of the drawing currently catalogued as the recto "b" (inv. no. WA1846.152b) can be found at RCIN 854522.
The photograph shows the half-length Virgin supporting the Christ Child with her right hand, who sits on a parapet and reaches for the book held by His mother, with view of landscape beyond; at top right, a sketch of a landscape.Provenance
